New Book Samuel Chan: Design Purity + Craft Principles
Channels is delighted to announce the publication of a new monograph on Samuel Chan, being launched this September during the London Design Festival.
Written by design historians Charlotte and Peter Fiell, it is a comprehensive survey of Samuel’s creative and entrepreneurial endeavours, celebrating his design career and the 20-year history of his studio, Channels.
The book tells the story of Samuel’s early years in Hong Kong, his education in Britain and how he came to furniture design. The Fiells assess the source of Samuel’s philosophy of design purity and craft principles, and how he draws on his heritage to produce furniture that is a synthesis of Eastern aesthetics and Western design ideals.
Richly illustrated with Samuel’s most important designs and projects, including the 15 pieces awarded Design Guild Marks, the book documents what is a unique body of work within contemporary British design. A wonderful chronicle for those who have followed the evolution of Samuel’s design over the years.

DGMs 2017
During Clerkenwell Design Festival 2017, Samuel Chan received another two Design Guild Marks to add to his collection. The Design Guild Mark (DGM) was introduced by The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers to reward the work of the finest furniture designers working in Britain. Judged annually by a panel of members from across the furniture industry, DGMs are awarded for excellence in design, use of materials, manufacture and function. Confluence • 20+ Hong Kong Edition 6 – 28 June ’17
Confluence · 20+ is a monumental roving exhibition series showcasing a wealth of collaborative works by talent in the Hong Kong design scene. As part of Hong Kong Design Centre's 'Confluence 20+' exhibition, Samuel Chan will be presenting a host of his works, at La Triennale di Milano, for the celebrated furniture fair Salone del Mobile in Milan. The exhibit will also include pieces from our sister brand Joined + Jointed.Read more

New Works recognised with Design Guild Marks
Samuel Chan’s newly launched designs - the Column Bookcase series and Magnus Chair - have been endorsed by this year’s Design Guild Marks, awarded by the Furniture Makers Guild. The DGMs were announced during May’s Clerkenwell Design Week. Column and Magnus were designed in the 20th anniversary year of the Channels studio, and express a certain freedom to experiment on Samuel’s part.
